If the workpiece is heated to a higher temperature and the aging process is used for a shorter time, it is called artificial aging treatment. If the workpiece is placed at room temperature or natural conditions for a long time and the aging phenomenon occurs, it is called natural aging treatment. The purpose of aging treatment is to eliminate the internal stress of the workpiece, stabilize the structure and size, and improve the mechanical properties.

Aluminum aging found that the hardness of this alloy after quenching is not high, but after a period of time at room temperature, the hardness will rise significantly, this phenomenon is later called precipitation hardening. The discovery aroused great interest in the engineering community. Subsequently, people have found some aluminum alloy, copper alloy and iron base alloy that can be strengthened by aging treatment, and created a new strengthening way that is fundamentally different from the general steel hardening - aging strengthening. When solid solution treatment is performed before aging treatment, the heating temperature must be strictly controlled so that the solute atomic energy z can be solidly dissolved into the solid solution to the maximum extent without causing the alloy to melt. The allowable deviation of heating temperature of many aluminum alloy solution treatment is only about 5℃. For artificial aging treatment, the heating temperature and holding time must be strictly controlled in order to obtain an ideal strengthening effect. Stage aging is sometimes used in production, that is, first at room temperature or slightly higher than room temperature for a period of time, and then at a higher temperature for a period of time. This can sometimes lead to better results.

Martensitic steel will undergo structural transformation during quenching and form martensite. Martensite is a supersaturated solid solution. The steel can also be strengthened by aging treatment.
